Johnny Kapahala, a thirteen-year-old boy from Hawaii, is a skilled surfer with a close-knit family, including his legendary grandfather Johnny Tsunami. When his father, Pete, is transferred for work, the family relocates to Vermont, leaving Tsunami behind in Hawaii.

A New Beginning

Upon arriving in Vermont, Johnny discovers the divide between skiers, known as Skies, and snowboarders, known as Urchins, in his new town. Despite attending the skiers’ school, Johnny is drawn to snowboarding, a sport he finds reminiscent of surfing. With the help of his new friend Sam Sterling, Johnny learns to snowboard and navigates his new school environment.

Friendship and Challenges

Johnny forms a close bond with Emily, the daughter of the school’s headmaster, but faces competition from a skier named Brett. Tensions rise between the Skies and Urchins, leading to a confrontation on the mountain. When Emily’s safety is jeopardized during a snowboarding lesson, Johnny must confront Brett, leading to a disagreement with his father Pete.

Reunion and Resolution

Feeling misunderstood by his father, Johnny decides to run away with Sam to Hawaii to seek solace with Tsunami. However, their adventure leads to a heart-to-heart conversation between Pete and Tsunami, prompting a reconciliation. Johnny discovers Tsunami’s snowboarding skills and joins forces with him to challenge Brett in a race for mountain rights.

Despite Brett’s attempts at sabotage, Johnny emerges victorious, uniting the Skies and Urchins on the mountain. The celebration that follows brings closure to past conflicts and sets the stage for a new sense of unity among the community.
