Hollis Figg is an earnest man with a devoted friend who works in sanitation and a girlfriend, Ema Letha, a waitress. Figg is an accountant at City Hall where the Mayor and others are skimming money from the city. Figg is promoted to run a computer he doesn’t understand after finding discrepancies in a budget.
When the Assistant State Attorney General becomes suspicious of the City Council’s activities, Figg, unknowingly, becomes the scapegoat due to signing various forms. To clear his name, Figg disguises himself as the deceased Mr. Spaulding’s mourning mother to access the evidence stored in the computer LEO.
Figg, along with his loyal friend, retrieves the evidence from Mr. Spaulding’s coffin at the cemetery, which leads to the discovery of incriminating IBM cards hidden within LEO’s memory bank. These cards hold the key to proving Figg’s innocence and exposing the corruption of the City Council.
Despite the Mayor and his accomplices escaping justice, Figg and Ema enjoy a honeymoon in Rio de Janeiro funded by the city as a gesture of gratitude. However, a sighting of familiar figures at their hotel raises suspicions, hinting that the corrupt officials might still be at large.
