Adelheid, known as Heidi (Shirley Temple), is an eight-year-old Swiss orphan given to her hermit grandfather, Adolph (Jean Hersholt), by her aunt Dete (Mady Christians). Despite Adolph’s initial reservations, Heidi’s cheerful demeanor warms his heart, leading him to interact with the town folks.
Heidi is taken back by her aunt to live with the wealthy Sesemann family in Frankfurt. She becomes a companion for Klara (Marcia Mae Jones), a sheltered girl with disabilities under the watchful eye of Fräulein Rottenmeier (Mary Nash). When Heidi longs for her grandfather, the pastor informs him about her whereabouts, prompting a search for her.
During a Christmas visit, Klara’s father witnesses her walking again and offers Heidi a home, but she refuses, yearning for her grandfather. Rottenmeier’s mistreatment of Heidi leads to her dismissal by Herr Sesemann. She then attempts to sell Heidi to gypsies, but Heidi’s grandfather intervenes. Despite Rottenmeier’s lies to the police, Heidi’s true story is confirmed, leading to a joyful reunion on the mountain.
