Hawaii Watch Free: A Tale of Love and Faith in the Islands

In the year 1819, a pivotal moment unfolds as Prince Keoki Kanakoa reaches out to the Yale Divinity School, seeking to bring Christianity to the beautiful Hawaiian Islands. Among the dedicated volunteers is the newly ordained Reverend Abner Hale, who faces a unique requirement: he must be married before embarking on this noble mission. Reverend Thorn introduces Abner to his young niece, Jerusha Bromley, who harbors feelings for Captain Rafer Hoxworth, a whaler currently lost at sea. Believing that Hoxworth has forgotten her, Jerusha reluctantly agrees to marry Abner after a brief courtship.

The Journey to Lahaina: A Missionary’s Arrival

The couple, alongside other missionaries and Prince Keoki, sets sail for Lahaina on the island of Maui. Upon their arrival, they are taken aback by what they perceive as the sinful ways of the islanders, including the shocking practice of incest within the royal family. Keoki’s father, Kelolo, is both the husband and biological brother of his mother, Malama Kanakoa, the ruler of the island. This incestuous tradition is intended to preserve the royal bloodline, and Keoki, aspiring to become a minister, is expected to marry his sister, Noelani, who is next in line to rule.

Building a New Life: The Hales in Lahaina

While other missionaries continue their journey to Honolulu, the Hales remain in Lahaina, living in a humble grass hut as they work tirelessly to build a church. Jerusha takes an active role in assisting the natives, including her efforts to end the tragic practice of infanticide after she rescues a baby with a facial birthmark. After a challenging labor, she gives birth to a son, Micah. During one of his whaling voyages, Rafer Hoxworth discovers Jerusha’s marriage to Abner and, consumed by jealousy, threatens to kill Abner. Despite the mounting tension, Abner successfully baptizes his first convert, a young Hawaiian girl named Iliki, who was given to the Hales as a servant.

Resistance and Conflict: The Struggle for Change

Malama, the island’s ruler, agrees to learn about Christianity but resists conversion, knowing it would require her to send Kelolo away. At the insistence of the Hales, Malama imposes a curfew on sailors and forbids them from fraternizing with native women, which incites a riot among the sailors. Hoxworth attempts to persuade Jerusha to leave with him, but she steadfastly refuses. When the sailors retaliate by partially burning the church, the Hawaiians rally to the Hales’ aid, driving the sailors back to their ships. In a final act of vengeance, Hoxworth entices Iliki to leave the island with him and throws Abner overboard when he tries to retrieve her. Abner is attacked by a shark, leaving him permanently lame.

Faith and Betrayal: The Cost of Belief

Years later, Abner confides in Keoki that he will never be ordained as a minister due to his race, offering him instead the role of deacon to oversee the natives’ activities. Keoki, feeling betrayed, refuses the offer, straining their friendship and ultimately renouncing Christianity. On her deathbed, Malama agrees to be baptized as a Christian and renounces Kelolo as her husband. As foretold by the natives, a strong gale strikes the town and destroys the church upon Malama’s death.

A New Era: Leadership and Consequences

Noelani ascends to the position of Ali’i Nui and marries Keoki. Abner crashes the wedding, realizing that Malama’s conversion was solely for the benefit of her people. As Kelolo departs for Bora Bora with Malama’s heart, Abner prays for divine retribution against the natives. When Noelani and Keoki’s child is born severely deformed, Abner interprets it as God’s punishment and dismisses Jerusha’s pleas to save the infant. In a tragic turn, Keoki drowns the child, and soon after, a measles outbreak devastates the native population, claiming hundreds of lives, including Keoki, who dies denouncing God.

The Toll of Time: Jerusha’s Sacrifice

Jerusha’s years of toil and childbearing take a significant toll on her health, leading to her early death. Grief-stricken, Abner becomes more compassionate toward the Hawaiians, even joining them in their fight against settlers and plantation owners who seek to seize more land. When the other ministers vote to profit from the land, Abner stands firm in his
