The Story of Happy as Lazzaro

On an estate known as Inviolata, isolated since 1977, 54 farmhands toil on a tobacco farm under a sharecropping arrangement, leading to perpetual debt and unpaid labor. The estate is managed in a feudal manner by the infamous Marchioness Alfonsina De Luna, also known as the “Queen of Cigarettes.” Lazzaro, a diligent worker on the farm, obediently follows every command issued by the Marchioness, her son Tancredi, and the estate manager.

Lazzaro’s Adventure with Tancredi

Tancredi befriends Lazzaro and devises a plan to stage his own kidnapping to incense his mother and acquire some of her wealth. Together, Tancredi and Lazzaro venture into the wilderness, crafting a false ransom note while forming a deep bond. They communicate with a lone wolf in the countryside by mimicking a wolf’s howl and contemplate the possibility of being half-siblings, inspired by Tancredi’s father’s past indiscretions. Lazzaro embraces the notion of brotherhood earnestly.

The Great Swindle

Despite Tancredi’s mother seeing through the fake kidnapping, the estate manager’s daughter takes it seriously enough to contact the police during a brief moment of signal strength. The police, arriving via helicopter, uncover illegal sharecropping practices, lack of wages for workers, and absence of mandatory education for children on the estate. Inviolata is evacuated, Alfonsina is apprehended in what becomes known as the “Great Swindle.” As Lazzaro is distracted by a helicopter, he tumbles off a cliff and is discovered unconscious in a ravine by a wolf, symbolically recognizing him as a virtuous individual.

After awakening magically years later, unchanged by time, Lazzaro ventures back to Inviolata, now deserted and being ransacked by thieves. Mistakenly informed by the robbers that the estate has relocated, Lazzaro embarks on a journey to the nearby city, encountering Antonia, who leads him to fellow impoverished survivors from Inviolata. Despite their astonishment at his unaltered appearance, Lazzaro’s primary concern is reuniting with Tancredi.

Upon hearing Tancredi’s voice in search of his dog, Lazzaro joyfully reunites with his “half-brother.” Tancredi, now affluent and operating a nightclub, invites the former estate workers to lunch to showcase his prosperity. However, an oversight leads to their dismissal, prompting the group to seek refuge in a church filled with organ music that resonates with them.

The Tragic End

Lazzaro discovers Tancredi has lost the De Luna fortune to the bank and resolves to assist his sibling. In an attempt to reclaim the family wealth, Lazzaro unwittingly triggers a bank alarm, leading bystanders to believe he is armed. Despite requesting the return of the De Luna fortune with only a slingshot in hand, Lazzaro is tragically beaten to death by terrified bank patrons. The film concludes with the wolf symbolically running free through the city streets, back to the countryside.
