Half of a Yellow Sun begins during the first Nigerian Independence Day on 1 October 1960 and concludes at the end of the Nigerian Civil War in 1970. The film follows the lives of twin sisters Olanna and Kainene as they navigate love, war, and family in Nigeria.
After completing their education abroad, Olanna and Kainene return to Nigeria. Olanna chooses to live with her lover, Odenigbo, a university professor, while Kainene takes over the family business and falls in love with an English writer, Richard.
Olanna faces challenges from Odenigbo’s mother and deals with betrayal in their relationship. Despite the obstacles, Olanna and Odenigbo reconcile and make a life together, even raising a child as their own.
As the Nigerian Civil War looms, the sisters find themselves caught in the turmoil. Olanna and her family flee to Biafra while Kainene becomes involved in war profiteering. The war forces them to confront difficult choices and tragedy.
Following the end of the war, Olanna and Odenigbo rebuild their lives along with Ugwu, their adopted child. The fate of Kainene remains unknown as Richard continues to search for her.
