This defiance leads to Maximus’s arrest by the Praetorian Guards, commanded by Quintus. In a desperate bid for survival, Maximus fights back, killing his captors and fleeing to his home near Turgalium, only to discover the tragic fate of his wife and son, who have been executed. Overcome with grief, Maximus buries them and collapses from his injuries.

Maximus is discovered by slave traders and sold to the gladiator trainer Proximo in Zuccabar, located in the Roman province of Mauretania Caesariensis. Reluctantly, he begins to fight in local tournaments, where his exceptional combat skills earn him victories and popularity among the crowds. He adopts the moniker “the Spaniard” and forms a bond with fellow gladiators Juba from Carthage and Hagen from Germania.

In Rome, Commodus organizes a grand spectacle of 150 days of gladiatorial games to honor his father and win the favor of the Roman populace. Proximo, who reveals his own past as a gladiator freed by Marcus Aurelius, advises Maximus to “win the crowd” to secure his freedom. This advice becomes crucial as Maximus prepares for his debut in the Colosseum.

The Colosseum: A Stage for Vengeance

Disguised in a masked helmet, Maximus makes his first appearance in the arena as a Carthaginian warrior, reenacting the historic Battle of Zama. To everyone’s surprise, he leads his team to victory, capturing the hearts of the audience. Commodus, accompanied by his young nephew Lucius, enters the Colosseum to congratulate the victor. That evening, Maximus is visited by Lucilla, his former lover and Commodus’s sister. Distrustful of her intentions, he declines her assistance, aware of the dangerous game they are all playing. Commodus, feeling threatened by Maximus’s rising popularity, arranges a duel between him and Tigris of Gaul, an undefeated gladiator. Despite facing several tigers during the match, Maximus emerges victorious, earning the title “Maximus the Merciful” when he spares Tigris’s life, much to Commodus’s fury.

Conspiracy and Betrayal: The Fight for Freedom

As Commodus becomes increasingly paranoid, he orders surveillance on every senator, fearing that Maximus could become a martyr. Meanwhile, Maximus learns from Cicero, his former orderly, that his loyal legions are still with him. He secretly meets with Lucilla and Gracchus, an influential senator, to devise a plan to escape Rome, overthrow Commodus, and restore power to the Senate.

However, their plans are thwarted when the Praetorians arrest Gracchus. Lucilla and Maximus share a moment of intimacy, but their hopes are dashed when Commodus discovers their conspiracy. In a desperate attempt to maintain control, he threatens Lucilla and Lucius, leading to a violent confrontation at the gladiators’ barracks. Proximo and his men sacrifice themselves to allow Maximus to escape, but he is ultimately captured during a rendezvous with Cicero, who is killed in the process.
