In the mid-1920s, wealthy Texas rancher Jordan “Bick” Benedict Jr. (Rock Hudson) embarks on a horse-buying trip to Maryland. There, he meets socialite Leslie Lynnton (Elizabeth Taylor), and their ensuing marriage leads them back to the Benedicts’ Texas cattle ranch, Reata.
At Reata, Leslie encounters the male-dominated Texas culture, where she is expected to be subservient. She also discovers the harsh treatment of Hispanic workers and insists on improvements, much to Bick’s reluctance.
