Plot Summary

In 1930, Lemuel “Lem” Siddons, a saxophonist in a traveling band, decides to settle down in the small town of Hickory and becomes a clerk in the general store owned by John Everett Hughes. Lem notices Vida Downey, a bank teller, and volunteers to become Scoutmaster of Troop 1 to keep the town’s boys off the streets.

Leadership and Challenges

Lem becomes a natural leader for the Scout troop, helping the boys mature into men. He faces challenges with the town troublemaker, Whitey, who eventually becomes a part of Lem’s life after a series of events involving theft, alcoholism, and tragedy.
