In 1930, Lemuel “Lem” Siddons, a saxophonist in a traveling band, decides to settle down in the small town of Hickory and becomes a clerk in the general store owned by John Everett Hughes. Lem notices Vida Downey, a bank teller, and volunteers to become Scoutmaster of Troop 1 to keep the town’s boys off the streets.
