In 1937, at a loading dock in Cleveland, supervisor Mr. Gant hires new worker Lincoln Dombrowsky. Unfair labor practices lead to a riot led by Johnny Kovak, eventually leading to the formation of the Federation of Inter State Truckers (F.I.S.T.).
Kovak and his friend Abe Belkin join F.I.S.T. and work towards gaining labor agreements for the members. Despite facing opposition and physical attacks, Kovak rises in leadership through his union recruiting efforts.
With successes in recruiting and union agreements, Kovak’s wealth grows, and he marries Anna. However, internal struggles within F.I.S.T. arise when Kovak discovers unethical practices by F.I.S.T. leader Max Graham.
Kovak confronts Graham, leading to his own election as F.I.S.T. president. However, suspicions of Mafia ties and internal betrayals haunt Kovak, leading to tragic events ultimately resulting in his presumed death.
