Plot Summary

In 1978, Tim Jenkin and Stephen Lee, two white South Africans, are arrested for anti-apartheid missions in South Africa. Sentenced to years in prison, they meet Denis Goldberg, an older political prisoner. Jenkin plans an escape using wooden keys made in secret.

Escape Plan

Jenkin, Lee, and another prisoner, Leonard Fontaine, execute their escape plan by using the wooden keys to unlock their cells. They dress in street clothes smuggled in earlier and manage to break out of Pretoria Prison with the help of Goldberg distracting the guard.

Escape and Aftermath

After escaping, the trio evades a manhunt and eventually makes their way to London via Mozambique and Tanzania. They continue their activism against apartheid under the African National Congress Party and are eventually pardoned in 1991, marking the end of apartheid.
