At a small college, psychology major Stephen Grace meets fellow student Quaid, who reveals his plan to conduct a “fear study” as a school project. Quaid, mentally unstable and obsessed with fear due to a traumatic past, wants to understand how people deal with dread.
Stephen recruits his friend Cheryl as the project’s editor, and they start interviewing people about their fears. Quaid becomes increasingly dissatisfied with the results and escalates tensions by picking fights.
Cheryl opens up about being molested by her father, while another interviewee shares her agoraphobia journey. Quaid’s own traumas remain hidden until a nightmare leads him to divulge the circumstances of his parents’ deaths.
Quaid urges Stephen to confront his fear of driving by purchasing a car similar to the one in which Stephen’s brother died. Meanwhile, tensions rise as relationships among the group become complicated.
Quaid’s behavior spirals out of control, leading to violent confrontations and psychological manipulation. The study takes a dark turn as the group dynamics deteriorate.
