Basketball coach Deb is expecting her first child with her artist boyfriend Silvio. Their seasoned doula Penka temporarily lives with the couple as they prepare for the birth. During a guided meditation, Deb and Silvio discover Penka has passed away.

While attending Penka’s funeral, they meet Penka’s only child Sascha. Sascha reminisces about his mother and how they both became doulas. Silvio invites him to stay despite Deb’s initial unease about having a stranger around.
With Silvio often away for work and Deb on maternity leave, she and Sascha spend a lot of time together, even going to a prenatal appointment where Deb learns she’s having a boy. Her doctor suggests a hospital delivery, but Sascha assures her that he supports whatever decision she makes.
Deb confronts Silvio about his decision to bring his out-of-state son Will to live with them without consulting her. Feeling like she’s losing her sense of self, Deb opens up to her mother’s group about her fears and insecurities.
During a birth simulation led by Sascha, Silvio opens up about a traumatic experience with Will’s almost fatal hospital birth. Deb stands her ground, asserting her decision on how she wants to give birth despite Silvio’s increasing annoyance towards Sascha.
Deb’s worries intensify as she goes into labor and struggles with feelings of inadequacy and fear of not loving her baby. She decides to deliver at home, leading to a tense moment between her, Silvio, and Sascha.
After a challenging delivery, Deb wakes up in the hospital to Silvio holding their newborn daughter. Despite the hardships, Sascha reminds them that the journey of parenthood is just beginning.
