In a run-down apartment building in post-apocalyptic France, food is scarce and grain serves as currency. The landlord, Clapet, runs a butcher’s shop on the ground floor, where he lures victims through job postings in the newspaper. These victims are then murdered and butchered for cheap meat to sell to the tenants.

The Arrival of Louison

After the latest worker is killed, unemployed circus clown Louison applies for the vacant position. Louison impresses with his skills, including a trick knife, leading the butcher to hesitate in disposing of him too quickly. During his work, Louison discovers a package dropped by a mailman. He delivers it to Clapet’s daughter, Julie, sparking a romantic connection between them.
