Plot Summary

In 1863, 1st Lieutenant John J. Dunbar is wounded in battle and chooses death over amputation. He miraculously survives and is awarded a horse, Cisco, and a posting on the American frontier. At Fort Sedgwick, Dunbar rebuilds the deserted fort and befriends the Sioux tribe.
