The film follows the life of Mata, a young woman who is sent to the Mercy Home for Desolate Children by her Pākehā father at a tender age. Renamed May Parker, Mata grows up unaware of her Māori roots and family, missing out on her culture and language.
One day, a Māori staff member at the Mercy Home recognizes Mata as a member of the Pairama clan, leading her to spend a summer with her “grandparents.” Meeting her Aunt Gloria and cousins, Missy and Makareta, in Rotorua, Mata is introduced to her Māori heritage and culture. Shockingly, she learns the truth about her mother’s fate and her father’s deception.
Despite the desire of her Māori relatives to adopt her into the Pairama clan, Mrs. Parker, the appointed guardian, opposes the idea. Mata is torn away from her family, facing struggles with her identity and heritage. As she goes through failed relationships and homelessness, her cousins Makareta and Missy search for her tirelessly.
After years of separation, Makareta and Mata reunite by chance in Wellington. Promising to bring Mata back to her roots, Makareta tragically passes away soon after. Mata returns to the Pairama lands with her cousin’s body, finding solace and connection with Missy.
