In the heart of East London, a construction site managed by Hartman Construction uncovers a hidden 17th-century catacomb, sealed by the order of Charles II. Two builders, driven by the lure of treasure, venture inside instead of alerting the authorities. Their curiosity leads to a disastrous encounter with zombies, igniting a terrifying outbreak that spreads through the area.
Meanwhile, Terry MacGuire and his younger brother Andy devise a daring plan to rob a bank. Their goal? To save their grandfather Ray’s retirement home from impending demolition. They enlist the help of their cousin Katy, the hapless Davey Tuppence, and “Mental” Mickey, an unstable Iraq War veteran with a metal plate in his forehead. Armed with an arsenal of weapons, they set out to execute their heist.
During the robbery, the group stumbles upon a high-stakes embezzlement deal involving the bank manager and the head of Hartman Construction. Expecting to find a modest sum, they are shocked to discover a staggering 2.5 million pounds in cash. Mistaken for Hartman employees due to their costumes, the bank manager quickly realizes the truth and activates an emergency button to summon the police.
As the bank becomes surrounded, Mickey takes charge of the escape plan, holding bank employees Emma and Clive hostage. However, their escape takes a dark turn when they discover that the police have fallen victim to the growing horde of zombies. With chaos erupting around them, the group manages to flee in their van, clutching the cash from the vault.
Back at the retirement home, the zombie outbreak wreaks havoc among the residents. Ray, along with fellow residents Peggy, former gangster Daryl, Doreen, and Eric, seeks refuge in the kitchen. In a heroic act, Ray rescues another resident named Hamish, bringing him to safety.
The MacGuires, along with Katy, Mickey, Davey, and their hostages, navigate through the devastated East End until they reach their safe house. Here, they learn about the extent of the zombie epidemic through the radio, leaving them uncertain about their next steps. Emma pleads with Mickey and Davey to release her and Clive, expressing her frustration with their ‘selfish’ plans. Katy counters, explaining that their intentions are to save the retirement home, not for personal gain.
As tensions rise, Mickey, increasingly irrational and weary of his companions, decides to take Emma and Clive to a side room, tying them up before sitting down to rest. Tragically, Mickey succumbs to his zombie bite and transforms into one of the undead. In a desperate attempt to end Mickey’s reign of terror, Terry uses a hand grenade, shoving it into Mickey’s mouth, resulting in a chaotic scene.
In the ensuing confusion, Clive seizes Mickey’s gun, contemplating turning the group over to the police. However, his plan is thwarted when he is ambushed and devoured by zombies, inadvertently shooting Davey in the process.
With the money packed and their lives on the line, the group piles into Terry’s car, determined to reach the retirement home. Along the way, they make a detour to search for Emma’s younger sister. When they find her transformed into a zombie, Emma faces a heart-wrenching decision, ultimately choosing not to kill her in hopes of a potential cure.
Realizing their car is insufficient for transporting the elderly residents, Katy takes matters into her own hands and hot-wires a classic red London double-decker bus. This bold move sets the stage for their next adventure.
