Charlie Bucket, a kind and loving boy living near the Wonka Factory, faces poverty with his family. The factory’s owner, Willy Wonka, closed it due to industrial espionage issues, causing Charlie’s Grandpa Joe and all other employees to lose their jobs. Meanwhile, Charlie’s father conceals his recent layoff from a toothpaste factory.
One day, Wonka announces a contest with Golden Tickets hidden in Wonka Bars worldwide. Winners get a full factory tour, a lifetime supply of chocolate, and a special prize. Augustus Gloop, Veruca Salt, Violet Beauregarde, and Mike Teavee find the first four tickets. Charlie finally finds the last ticket after a failed attempt and decides to keep it despite monetary offers.
Joined by Grandpa Joe, Charlie meets the other ticket holders at the factory entrance. Character flaws lead to the elimination of the other children during the tour. Wonka shares his troubled past, revealing his candy obsession from childhood. After the tour, Charlie is the last one standing, chosen as Wonka’s potential heir.
Charlie’s refusal to leave his family for the factory position surprises Wonka, who faces a declining company. Seeking advice, he turns to Charlie, leading to a reconciliation with his estranged father, Wilbur. Witnessing the importance of family, Wonka invites Charlie and his family to live in the factory, bringing everyone closer together.
