Juan Oliver arrives at the prison a day early for his new job as a guard. A riot breaks out, and he finds himself in the midst of the chaos in Cell 211. He decides to pretend to be a prisoner to survive and ends up gaining the trust of the riot leader, Malamadre, by proposing negotiation strategies.
Malamadre discovers that Basque terrorists are among the inmates and plans to use them as leverage during negotiations. Meanwhile, Juan’s pregnant wife, Elena, gets caught in the protest outside the prison and is injured. Juan tries to protect her by working with the authorities and the inmates.
As the situation escalates, Juan’s true identity is revealed, leading to a series of confrontations and betrayals. When Elena tragically dies, Juan seeks revenge on the guard responsible, leading to a violent altercation within the prison.
In a final act of desperation, Juan forces the government to meet Malamadre’s demands publicly on the threat of violence against the ETA prisoners. As the authorities prepare to storm the prison, a tense standoff ensues, culminating in a tragic sacrifice that changes the course of events.
