In the 1960s, nestled in the breathtaking Alps, a pair of eagles prepares to welcome their two hatching eggs. As the eaglets emerge, their mother faces a difficult decision: she must choose one to raise as her successor. Tragedy strikes when a fierce battle with another eagle leads to the death of their father, who crashes to the ground. In the chaos, one eaglet falls from the nest, and despite its desperate cries, the mother eagle instinctively focuses on the surviving chick.

The Struggles of Lukas and His Father

Meanwhile, in the mountains, forester Danzer, played by Jean Reno, encounters a young boy named Lukas, portrayed by Manuel Camacho, and his father, Keller (Tobias Moretti). They have recently moved into a new home following the tragic death of Maria (Eva Kuen), Lukas’s mother, who perished in a fire. Keller, deeply affected by the loss, struggles to connect with his son, who increasingly seeks solace in nature, distancing himself from his grieving father. Lukas often visits the ruins of their old house, where he finds comfort in a photograph of his late mother.

A New Bond: Lukas and the Eaglet

During a walk in the forest with his dog Scout, Lukas discovers the fallen eaglet and decides to nurse it back to health. He brings the eaglet to his old home, determined to care for it. Danzer, noticing Lukas’s dedication, offers his assistance, sharing his knowledge about the proper care for the eaglet. He advises Lukas on the importance of sunlight and proper nutrition for the young bird.

Summer Adventures with Abel

As Lukas nurtures Abel, Danzer invites him to spend the summer with him, allowing Abel to accompany them. With a special restrain, Lukas can catch Abel, and together they embark on new adventures. At Danzer’s home, Lukas discovers a portrait of a young boy with an eagle, igniting his imagination. He attempts to catch fish for Abel, but the eaglet proves elusive.

As Abel and his brother grow their wings, Lukas dedicates himself to teaching Abel how to fly. One night, Lukas returns to his old house, but the next day, he finds Abel missing. To his surprise, he sees Abel soaring through the sky, only to feel a pang of sadness when the eaglet flies away. Danzer reassures Lukas that Abel is simply exploring the wild, though he admits uncertainty about Abel’s future.

The Challenges of Nature

Abel faces the harsh realities of nature, attempting to hunt a chamois but failing. Lukas reflects on the dangers that lie ahead for Abel, including the threat of his father’s shotgun and the rivalry with his brother, whom Lukas has symbolically named Cain. After a few days, Abel returns to Lukas, and Danzer offers to teach him how to train the eaglet to hunt.

Despite Keller’s disapproval of Danzer’s methods, they proceed with their training. A moment of panic arises when they mistakenly believe Abel is targeting Scout, only to discover he has successfully hunted a weasel. Danzer gently reminds Lukas that one day, Abel will have to leave, a truth that Lukas reluctantly accepts.

A Bittersweet Farewell

In a poignant moment, Lukas and Danzer blindfold Abel and take him to an unknown part of the mountains. With a heavy heart, Lukas bids farewell to his beloved eaglet. Once the blindfold is removed, they release Abel into the sky, marking a bittersweet moment of freedom.

Winter’s Trials and Tribulations

As winter arrives, Abel learns to hunt and fend for himself. Lukas, reminiscing about his feathered friend, creates a small memorial with rocks and one of Abel’s feathers. One day, while sleeping, Lukas awakens to find a wolf nearby. In a panic, he runs but accidentally steps into a bear trap. Danzer, fortuitously nearby, scares the wolf away and helps Lukas heal, though the rift between Lukas and Keller continues to widen.
