The story begins with André Borkman attending a memorial service for Jacob, the son of his estranged brother-in-law, Louis. A driver loses control and crashes into a tree, prompting Abel to try to calm her while Marie-Louise calls for help. Unfortunately, a nearby truck also loses control, resulting in a devastating accident that claims the life of the young girl involved, leaving Abel and Marie-Louise severely injured.
