A new wing at Britannia Hospital is set to open, with the Queen scheduled to arrive. The hospital’s administrator, Potter (Leonard Rossiter), faces various challenges, including demonstrators protesting an African dictator’s VIP treatment, striking ancillary workers, and a difficult head of the new wing, Professor Millar (Graham Crowden).
Instead of canceling the royal visit, Potter decides to negotiate with the protestors. A deal is struck to remove the private patients in exchange for allowing ambulances into the hospital. Little do the protestors know, the ambulances carry the Queen Mother and her entourage.
