Life in Senegal

The plot continually shifts back and forth between Diouana’s present life in France where she works as a domestic servant, and flashbacks of her previous life in Senegal. In the flashbacks, it is revealed that she comes from a poor village outside of Dakar. Most people are illiterate and Diouana would roam the city looking for a job. One day, the character of ‘Madame’ comes to the square looking for a servant and selects Diouana from amongst the unemployed women.

A New Life in France

Madame hires Diouana to care for her children in Dakar. As a gift, Diouana gives her employers a traditional mask, and they display it in their home. Monsieur and Madame then offer Diouana a job working for them in France. Diouana is thrilled, and immediately begins dreaming of her new life in France.

Struggles in France

Once she arrives, Diouana is overwhelmed with cooking and cleaning for the rich couple and their friends. Madame treats her unkindly, and Diouana is confused as to her role. She thought that she would be caring for the children as in Senegal, yet in France, she does not leave the apartment and only cooks and cleans inside the house. When Diouana works, she wears a fancy dress and heels. The mistress of the house tells her to remember her place as a maid.

At one of the dinner parties, a friend kisses Diouana in typical European fashion, only to remark, “I’ve never kissed a black girl before!” Diouana receives a letter from her mother asking for money but tears it up in frustration. Madame’s stringent rules and demands push Diouana to a breaking point.

Tragic End and Return to Senegal

Desperate, Diouana tries to reclaim the mask she had given Madame, leading to a confrontation. Madame insists that without work, Diouana cannot eat. Refusing to comply, Diouana tragically commits suicide. The film closes with Monsieur returning to Senegal to deliver Diouana’s belongings to her family, offering monetary compensation which is declined. As he departs, a little boy with the mask trails behind him.
