Behind the Candelabra: A Tale of Love and Loss

Meeting Liberace

In 1977, 18-year-old Scott Thorson meets Hollywood producer Bob Black at a gay bar in Los Angeles. Black introduces Thorson to Liberace, the famous pianist, who takes a liking to him immediately. Thorson becomes Liberace’s assistant and lover, living with him in his luxurious home in Las Vegas.

The Relationship Unravels

As Thorson becomes frustrated with Liberace’s attempts to control him and hide their romance, their relationship begins to deteriorate. Thorson’s drug abuse and Liberace’s interest in other men lead to their eventual breakup. Thorson seeks financial compensation through a palimony lawsuit against Liberace.

The Final Goodbye

In December 1986, Thorson receives a call from Liberace, who is gravely ill with AIDS. Thorson visits him one last time at his retreat house in Palm Springs. They have an emotional final conversation before Liberace passes away in February 1987. Thorson attends Liberace’s funeral, where he imagines seeing him perform one last time before being lifted to Heaven.
