In 1974, Skeeter and Wendy Bronson grow up under the care of their father, Marty, who runs the family business, the Sunny Vista Motel. Despite his dedication as a hotelier, Marty faces dire financial challenges that threaten the future of their beloved motel. To save the family from bankruptcy, Marty sells the motel to his close friend, Barry Nottingham, a germaphobic CEO and founder of the Nottingham Hotels chain. Nottingham transforms the motel into a luxurious establishment called the Sunny Vista Nottingham, with the stipulation that Skeeter will manage it when he comes of age.

The Struggles of Skeeter Bronson

Fast forward to the present, Skeeter finds himself working tirelessly as a repairman at the hotel, feeling trapped in a role that doesn’t reflect his potential. Nottingham announces plans to close the old motel to construct a larger hotel, the Sunny Vista Mega Nottingham, and appoints the snobbish Kendall Duncan as its future manager, simply because he is dating Nottingham’s daughter, Violet. Unbeknownst to everyone, Kendall is also having an affair with the hotel manager, Aspen.

A New Responsibility: Watching the Kids

Wendy, now a principal at a school facing closure, asks Skeeter to look after her children, Patrick and Bobbi, while she searches for a new job in Arizona. On their first night together, Skeeter cynically tells the children a bedtime story where he imagines himself as an underdog peasant in a medieval fantasy world, overlooked for a promotion. The children, dissatisfied with the story’s grim ending, suggest that he should at least get a chance at the promotion and that it should rain gumballs.

When Bedtime Stories Come to Life

The next day, Skeeter is astonished when Nottingham, recalling a promise made to Marty, offers him a chance at the manager position. On his way home, he experiences a bizarre twist of fate as gumballs rain down on him from a truck accident. Skeeter realizes that the children’s imaginative additions to his stories are coming true.

Adventures in Storytelling

That night, Skeeter tells a wild west tale where he, as a cowboy, receives an expensive horse named Ferrari. Later, he saves Violet from intrusive paparazzi and mistakenly believes that the Ferrari belongs to him when he sees her drive away. Skeeter soon understands that only the children’s contributions to his stories manifest in reality.

Romance Blossoms Through Stories

The following night, with the children’s help, Skeeter spins a tale about a chariot-riding stuntman in Ancient Greece who wins a date with the “fairest maiden in the land.” The next day, he finds himself spending time with Jill, his sister’s friend, and develops feelings for her.

The Final Night of Storytelling

On Skeeter’s last night with the children, he narrates a space opera where he triumphs over Kendall in a duel. However, the children, recalling Skeeter’s earlier remark about the absence of happy endings in real life, add a twist where someone kills him with a fireball. Skeeter learns from Kendall that the new Nottingham Hotel will be built on the site of the closing school.

Competition and Heartfelt Speeches

Both Skeeter and Kendall present their marketing strategies for the hotel, but Skeeter’s heartfelt speech about family resonates with the audience, earning him the managerial position. However, in a moment of paranoia stemming from his story, Skeeter accidentally sprays a fire extinguisher on Nottingham’s cake, leading to his dismissal.

A Race Against Time

Despite the setback, Skeeter surprises both Jill and Nottingham by successfully relocating the hotel to a beachfront property in Santa Monica. He and Jill rush to the school site to prevent its demolition. While protesting, Bobbi and Patrick sneak into the building to display their sign more prominently. Just in time, Skeeter and Jill thwart Kendall’s plan to detonate explosives, saving the children and the school.

A Happy Ending for Skeeter

In the aftermath, Skeeter marries Jill and opens a motel in honor of his father. Kendall and Aspen find themselves demoted to waiting staff at the new establishment. Meanwhile, Violet marries Skeeter’s best friend, Mickey, who gains control of the Nottingham Empire. Nottingham leaves the hotel industry to pursue a career as a school nurse, while Skeeter and Jill embrace parenthood with the arrival of their baby boy.
