Plot Summary

Overview

Aurora Teagarden Mysteries: Something New takes place during Aurora’s (Skyler Samuels) post-college days when she finds herself back home in Lawrenceton. While her mother, Aida (Marilu Henner), struggles to keep her newfound real estate business, Aurora supports herself by working as a teacher’s assistant in a crime fiction class and waitresses at the local diner at night, where she shares her love of researching true crime with her best friend, Sally (Kayla Heller), and police officer, Arthur (Evan Roderick). When Sally’s fiancé doesn’t show up at their wedding rehearsal, maid of honor Aurora gets Arthur to help her search for him. When they discover a body, everyone assumes it is Sally’s tardy groom, but when it turns out to be someone else, Sally’s fiancée becomes the main suspect.

2008 Setting

It’s 2008 and long having been obsessed with true crime literature, Aurora Teagarden, Ro to her friends, has just transferred from college in Seattle to “hometown” Lawrenceton University in Masters of Library Sciences upon learning that the program has just started a True Crime Literature specialization. Having moved out eight years ago, she, with no money, is working two jobs, one as a Teaching Assistant for her thesis advisor, Professor Lindo, and another as a diner waitress, and has moved rent-free back in with her divorced mother, Aida Teagarden, who is struggling to keep the doors of her fledgling real estate business open. Ro’s arrival back in town is good timing as she is the maid of honor to her BFF Sally Allison, her fiancé tech expert, Matt Walker, who with his best friend/best man, Carson Haker, are in the process of selling their web platform company for a hefty sum. Beyond the wedding and the company sale, it does not seem like a good time for Matt as he is: being stalked by his former girlfriend, Dawn Palmer, who Carson states is basically harmless; and openly accosted by an unknown male with the inference that the unknown person knows him. The situation becomes worse for Sally in that just before the wedding Matt goes missing and Ro discovers a dead body on the ground outside of Matt’s condo, indication being that the victim was not only in Matt’s condo but that he fell from Matt’s third floor balcony after being assaulted in the unit. While Ro and Sally’s childhood friend, now Police Constable Arthur Smith, is part of the team investigating the death, Ro unaware of Arthur’s long held romantic feelings for her, Ro, as a fan of true crime, can’t help but insert herself both into the investigation of the death and into the search for Matt, while Matt’s older protective sister, Kara Walker, a bridesmaid, attends to Sally’s needs. Sally is convinced that Matt will do whatever to make it to their wedding.
