At Play in the Fields of the Lord Watch Free: A Journey into the Heart of the Amazon

“At Play in the Fields of the Lord Watch Free” takes viewers on a gripping adventure deep into the Brazilian Amazon, where a pair of explorers, Lewis Moon and Wolf, find themselves stranded in the remote outpost of Mãe de Deus. With no way to return home after their plane runs out of fuel, they become entangled in a web of intrigue and moral dilemmas that challenge their beliefs and actions.

Stranded in the Amazon: Lewis Moon and Wolf’s Dilemma

As the explorers struggle to survive in the harsh environment of the Amazon basin, they encounter the local police commander, who has a plan to protect the Niaruna tribe. Gold miners have begun moving into the area, and the commander fears that the tribe’s presence will create trouble with the provincial government. He strikes a deal with Moon: if Moon and his companion Wolf bomb the Niaruna village from the air to drive them away, they will be given the fuel they need to escape the jungle.

Faced with a moral choice, Moon agrees to the deal, but what follows will change the course of his life forever. The unfolding story touches on themes of duty, survival, and the complex relationships between indigenous tribes and outside influences. As the tension rises, Moon begins to question his role in the events unfolding around him.

Missionaries Arrive: The Quarriers and the Niaruna Tribe

Meanwhile, Martin Quarrier, a born-again Christian missionary, and his wife Hazel arrive in Mãe de Deus with their young son, Billy. Their mission is to spread the Christian gospel to the Niaruna people. Along with fellow missionaries Leslie and Andy Huben, they form a team dedicated to converting the Niaruna tribe to Christianity. Upon their arrival, they encounter a Catholic priest who wishes to re-establish a mission with the Niaruna tribe, as the previous missionary was killed by them.

While the Quarriers work to establish their mission, they are unaware of the growing tensions between the Niaruna people and the local authorities. The story explores the cultural clash between the indigenous people and the outsiders, both from the perspective of the missionaries and the explorers.

A Change of Heart: Moon’s Inner Conflict

As Moon and Wolf take to the skies to carry out the bombing of the Niaruna village, Moon has a life-changing moment. Upon seeing the village and the tribe’s way of life, Moon experiences a shift in his perspective. A native American firing an arrow at the plane only heightens his uncertainty. Returning to Mãe de Deus, Moon begins to question the morality of his mission.

That night, Moon takes a native drug and experiences vivid hallucinations, which lead him to make a bold decision. Against the advice of his companions, Moon boards his plane alone, parachuting into the Niaruna village. It is here that Moon, a half-Native American Cheyenne, is accepted as “Kisu-Mu,” one of the gods of the Niaruna people. As he immerses himself in their culture, Moon begins to align himself with the tribe, adapting to their way of life.

The Evangelists’ Mission and Tragedy Strikes

As the Quarriers and their fellow missionaries continue their work upriver, tragedy strikes. The death of young Billy from blackwater fever devastates Hazel, causing her to lose her sanity. She is sent back to Mãe de Deus, leaving Martin to struggle with his faith. As Martin loses hope and argues with Leslie, the tension between the missionaries grows, further complicating their mission.

Meanwhile, Moon’s relationship with the tribe becomes more complicated. After a seemingly innocent interaction with Andy Huben, Moon inadvertently infects the Niaruna tribe with a cold. The tribe, which had been living peacefully, soon finds itself facing an illness that spreads rapidly through their community.

The Final Confrontation: Bombs, Betrayal, and Survival

As the tribe suffers, Moon and the Niaruna leaders go to Leslie, pleading for medicine. Leslie refuses, but Martin agrees to help. He travels to the village with the missionaries’ young assistant. In a fateful turn of events, helicopters arrive to begin bombing the Niaruna village. Martin survives the initial bombing but meets a tragic end at the hands of his assistant.

In the chaos, Moon is exposed as a man, not a god. With the tribe in disarray, he is forced to flee, ending up alone and disconnected from both the Niaruna and the outside world. The story ends on a somber note, as Moon confronts the harsh realities of his actions and the consequences of his choices.
