In 1930s Prague, a Czech cremator who firmly believes cremation relieves one from earthly suffering is drawn inexorably to Nazism.
Country: Czechoslovakia
In the midst of the Great Depression in 1933, a young orphan named Annie lives at the Hudson Street Orphanage in New York City. This orphanage is run by the cruel and alcoholic Agatha Hannigan, who forces the children to clean the building every day. Despite her circumstances, Annie remains hopeful, believing that her parents, who abandoned her as a baby, will one day return for her. Annie’s only possession is a broken locket, symbolizing her connection to her past.
With the help of Mr. Bundles, a kind laundry man, Annie sneaks out of the orphanage and adopts a stray dog she names Sandy. Though she is caught and returned to the orphanage, Annie’s spirit remains unbroken. Her life takes a turn when Grace Farrell, the secretary to billionaire Oliver Warbucks, arrives at the orphanage with a unique opportunity. Grace invites one lucky orphan to live with Warbucks for a week to improve his public image. Annie is chosen, and she embarks on an exciting new chapter of her life at Warbucks’ mansion, accompanied by Sandy.
At first, Oliver Warbucks is dismissive of Annie, largely because she is a young girl. However, he begins to warm to her charm as she settles into his lavish home, meeting his servants and two bodyguards, Punjab and the Asp. Warbucks takes Annie and Grace to Radio City Music Hall, where they watch the film Camille, and through this shared experience, he begins to develop a deep affection for Annie.
As Warbucks grows closer to Annie, Grace suggests that he consider adopting her. He meets with Miss Hannigan to discuss the possibility, and after some persuasion, she reluctantly agrees to sign the adoption papers. However, Annie’s heart is not ready to let go of her past.
Warbucks, eager to make Annie’s life better, offers her a new locket, but she refuses, explaining that her broken locket is all she has left of her real parents. She holds onto the hope that they will one day return to reunite with her. To aid in the search, Warbucks announces on Bert Healy’s radio show that he will offer a $50,000 reward to anyone who can provide information about Annie’s parents. This causes a frenzy, with numerous individuals coming forward to claim the reward.
To escape the chaos, Warbucks takes Annie to Washington, D.C., where they meet President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his wife Eleanor. Roosevelt shares his plans to introduce a social welfare program to assist America’s impoverished, and he encourages Warbucks to take on a leadership role in this initiative. Annie, ever hopeful, encourages Warbucks to take action and help those in need.
Back at the orphanage, Miss Hannigan is visited by her brother Rooster and his girlfriend Lily St. Regis. Together, they hatch a plan to pose as Annie’s parents in order to claim the reward money. Through a series of manipulations, Rooster and Lily convince Miss Hannigan to reveal the truth: Annie’s real parents died in a fire, and Hannigan possesses the other half of Annie’s locket.
Annie’s friends overhear this conversation and try to warn her, but they are caught and locked away. Rooster and Lily successfully trick Warbucks into believing they are Annie’s biological parents, and Annie is heartbroken to leave the mansion and her newfound family. However, moments after leaving the mansion, Annie is kidnapped by Rooster and Lily, sparking a frantic search for the young girl.
As the kidnapping unfolds, Annie manages to outsmart her captors, convincing them to pull over, and she escapes their clutches. She destroys Warbucks’ check, which sends Rooster into a fit of rage. He chases Annie up a raised drawbridge, intent on harming her. In a dramatic twist, Miss Hannigan realizes Rooster’s true intentions and tries to stop him, but he knocks her out of the way and continues his pursuit.
In a heroic moment, Punjab swoops in to save Annie from Rooster’s clutches, rescuing her just in time. Annie is reunited with Warbucks and Grace, and Rooster and Lily are arrested for their crimes. Annie’s journey ends on a heartwarming note as she is officially adopted by Warbucks and Grace, and they begin their new life together.
The story of Annie is one of resilience, hope, and the power of family. Despite the challenges and hardships she faces, Annie never loses sight of her dream of being reunited with her parents. Her journey teaches us the importance of perseverance, kindness, and the belief that good things are possible, even in the darkest of times.
