In 1997, Maura Mackenzie and her two daughters, Bonnie and Brianna Fraser, arrive at their summer home in Tors Cove, Newfoundland, for what is supposed to be a peaceful two-week vacation. Maura’s husband, Duncan Fraser, a driven reporter covering a political story in Russia, is absent. Meanwhile, Maura, a talented pianist, hopes to use this time to relax before an important audition for her upcoming American tour. Little does she know, this vacation will take her down an emotional path that will change her life forever.
Maura’s plans are derailed when she receives a call from Duncan, informing her that he will be staying in Russia for the entire summer to pursue his story, leaving her to spend the rest of the season alone in Newfoundland. This decision forces Maura to miss her audition, and she quickly spirals into a deep depression. She begins playing her piano obsessively at night, while sleeping throughout the day, leaving her daughters to fend for themselves.
Maura’s father, Ian, who lives nearby, begins to notice signs of instability in his daughter. He suspects that Maura may be experiencing the early stages of bipolar disorder, as her erratic behavior becomes more evident. However, her mental health issues worsen, and Maura isolates herself further, struggling to cope with the pressures of being alone and the absence of her supportive husband.
During one manic episode, Maura takes Bonnie and Brianna to a nearby island. In her state of mania, she forgets them there, leading to a terrifying accident. Bonnie breaks her arm and nearly drowns as a result of Maura’s neglect. This tragic event pushes Maura into an even deeper depression, and she begins to exhibit more dangerous behavior. When Duncan returns from Russia, he takes the children with him to Scotland, leaving Maura behind in her fragile state.
Diagnosed with bipolar II disorder, Maura rejects any treatment or medication, which only exacerbates her condition. Her neighbor, Paula, urges her to seek help, believing it is the only way for Maura to be reunited with her daughters. However, Maura continues to battle her demons in isolation, and the situation only becomes more dire.
Six months later, Maura is released from a psychiatric ward after her doctors assess her as stable enough to leave. She wins legal visitation rights with Bonnie and Brianna despite Duncan’s objections. However, during a walk in the woods before the visitation, Maura injures herself and misses the opportunity to see her children. This setback leads Duncan to file for divorce and full custody of the girls, leaving Maura devastated.
Consumed by despair, Maura travels to a remote coastal area with the intention of ending her life at the same wharf where her mother had committed suicide years earlier. As she arrives at the wharf, Maura becomes disoriented, hallucinating the apparition of her mother calling her into the ocean. In a moment of weakness, Maura follows the ghostly figure into the water, nearly drowning in the process.
Fate intervenes when Ben, a lonely trucker passing through the area, rescues Maura from the water. The two spend the night together, and over time, Maura joins Ben on a month-long journey through the neighboring provinces. Their bond deepens, and they fall in love, eventually returning to Tors Cove to live together. Maura begins to rebuild her life, finding solace in her new relationship with Ben.
Twenty years later, Maura is in her mid-40s when she learns that Bonnie, now a professor, has returned to Newfoundland to give a lecture at Memorial University. Maura, accompanied by Ben, attends the lecture in the hopes of reconnecting with her daughter. However, when they arrive, they overhear Bonnie discussing her wedding plans, which will take place later that month in Newfoundland.
Maura approaches Bonnie, but to her heartbreak, her daughter does not recognize her. Maura is devastated, but Paula encourages her to attend the wedding, hoping it might provide an opportunity for healing. Maura, determined to show her daughters that she has changed, decides to send them a bouquet of their favorite childhood flowers, hoping it will be a sign of forgiveness.
On the day of the wedding, Maura stands outside the church, waiting for Bonnie and Brianna. However, as Maura becomes overwhelmed with anxiety, she has a panic attack and can only watch them enter the church from a distance. Just as Maura is about to leave, Bonnie emerges from the church and sees her mother standing there. The two share an emotional reunion, and Maura realizes that, despite everything, her daughters have not abandoned her. The story ends with Bonnie and Brianna returning to Tors Cove to be with their mother, and the family finally begins to heal.
