On VE Day – 8 May 1945 – London celebrates the end of World War II. Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret join the celebrations against the Queen’s wishes. The King tasks Elizabeth to report back on public sentiment towards him.
Chaperoned by army officers, the princesses are to return to Buckingham Palace by 1 a.m. However, the planned itinerary disappoints them, leading Margaret to slip away first, followed by Elizabeth.
On different buses, Margaret is misled into a world of Soho nightclubs, while Elizabeth befriends an airman named Jack. Adventure unfolds as they try to catch up with Margaret beyond the curfew.
Elizabeth and Jack find Margaret in Trafalgar Square, leading to a humorous wheelbarrow ride back to the Palace. After a series of misadventures, they all end up safe and sound at the Palace.
In a heartwarming moment, the King thanks Jack for looking after Elizabeth. As she bids him farewell, they share a brief kiss, leaving Elizabeth smiling as she drives away.
