Kenney’s burnout leads him to leave the magazine abruptly, leaving Beard to manage its continued success. After a buyout with Simmons, Beard exits the magazine, and National Lampoon expands to a radio show featuring Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, and Gilda Radner before being bought by Lorne Michaels for Saturday Night Live.

Downfall and Tragedy

Kenney’s transition to movies with Animal House and Caddyshack leads to a cocaine addiction that spirals out of control. Despite efforts to help him kick his addiction, Kenney tragically passes away in 1980 at the age of 33.
