At the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba, Private William Santiago, a United States Marine, is found dead after being tied up and beaten mysteriously in the night. Lance Corporal Harold Dawson and Private First Class Louden Downey are accused of his murder and prepare for a court-martial. The inexperienced United States Navy JAG Corps Lieutenant Daniel Kaffee takes on their defense, while Lieutenant Commander Joanne Galloway suspects foul play.
Kaffee and Galloway investigate the events leading to Santiago’s death and uncover a disturbing chain of command. Suspicion falls on Colonel Nathan Jessep, who allegedly ordered a violent extrajudicial punishment known as a “code red”. Despite facing contempt and resistance, Kaffee pushes forward with the defense.
As the court-martial progresses, shocking revelations come to light. Witness testimonies, including a dramatic confession from Jessep, challenge the accused Marines’ guilt. A tragic suicide, conflicting evidence, and a daring move by Kaffee add layers of complexity to the case.
In a surprising twist, Dawson and Downey are acquitted of murder but found guilty of lesser charges. Despite the outcome, Kaffee imparts a powerful lesson on honor and duty. The trial concludes with a poignant moment of respect and reflection, as truths are revealed and justice is served.
