1900: A Tale of Liberation and Social Change

In 1945, Italy experiences liberation from the fascists. On an estate in Emilia-Romagna, the peasants strive to join the partisans and take the landowner, Alfredo Berlinghieri, into custody. Attempting to escape, a middle-aged man named Attila and a woman named Regina encounter an assault by women laborers armed with pitchforks.

A Tale of Two Friends

Alfredo and Olmo Dalcò, both born in 1901, come from different backgrounds. Alfredo, belonging to a wealthy landowner family, grows up with his cousin Regina. On the other hand, Olmo, an illegitimate peasant, is raised by his grandfather Leo, the foreman, and the spokesperson for the peasants. Despite their differences, Alfredo develops a friendship with Olmo, who is brought up with socialist values. During their youths, Leo leads strikes against injustices on the farm, and the two companions spend much time together.

Rise of Ideologies

In 1917, Olmo enlists in the Royal Italian Army for World War I, while Alfredo learns to manage the family’s estate. Upon Olmo’s return, their friendship endures but undergoes changes. Giovanni, Alfredo’s father and the new landowner, employs Attila Mellanchini, a fascist overseer who mistreats the estate workers.

In 1922, Olmo, in a relationship with Anita, organizes protests for workers’ rights. Giovanni’s passing leads to Alfredo assuming the role of the new landowner, marrying Ada. Throughout the harsh winter of 1935, Alfredo struggles as a leader, succumbing to the influence of the ruling National Fascist Party. Ada’s struggles with alcoholism mirror the void in their marriage. In the meantime, Olmo’s spouse Anita perishes during childbirth, leaving behind a daughter, supportive of her father’s socialist convictions.

Clash of Classes

As Olmo emerges as a prominent figure among the impoverished farmers, conflicts with Attila escalate. Attila’s cruel tendencies lead to atrocities, prompting the peasants to stand up against him, causing his humiliation. Alfredo dismisses Attila, but by then, Ada has already departed. Following World War II, a shift in power occurs, and the local nobility faces consequences.

Attila and Regina are captured and imprisoned in the Berlinghieri pigsty. Attila confesses to his crimes before facing execution. Olmo returns to witness Alfredo’s trial before a workers’ tribunal. Accused of allowing the workers to suffer, Alfredo is sentenced to death but is spared when Olmo declares the end of the landowner, symbolizing the overthrow of the prevailing social structure.

A Glimpse into the Future

Government representatives and soldiers arrive, urging the peasants to surrender their weapons. Olmo persuades them, but in a private moment with Olmo, Alfredo hints at the persistence of the class divide. The film wraps up with a scene of the elderly Alfredo and Olmo engaging in playful roughhousing, followed by a leap forward to them strolling alongside a railroad track. Alfredo lies down on the rails, mimicking a childhood game, and as a train nears, he seemingly contemplates suicide. The train passes over him, reminiscent of his youthful play.
